At a ceremony held last week, LA Family Housing and Meta Housing Corporation marked the opening of Silva Crossing, a new permanent supportive housing complex on a previously vacant site in Sylmar.

The more than $30-million project, located at 12663 N. San Fernando Road, consists of a four-story building featuring 56 apartments - ranging between 400 and 500 square feet in size - reserved for formerly homeless households.

Y&M Architects designed the wood-frame building, with an exterior of brick, stucco, and horizontal siding. The building envelope of the apartment complex scales down toward a residential community toward the rear property line.

Besides housing, the building also includes a 1,100-square-foot community room, offices for staff, and outdoor amenities such as a dog walk, a courtyard, and a rooftop deck. Parking for residents and staff is located in 27 spaces at the ground floor.

The housing at Silva Crossing is accompanied by on-site supportive services, including case management, health care connections, education, and employment resources.

Financing for Silva Crossing came from multiple state and local sources, including Measure HHH and Los Angeles County's No Place Like Home Program.

The project's developers are both prolific builders of affordable and supportive housing. Both are either building or have previously completed similar developments in the San Fernando Valley.
